In the context of the XII Portuguese Congress of Sociology that will take place from April 4 to 7 in Coimbra, a communication by T. P. Marques, S. Portugal & M. Faustini will be presented on April 6th, at 4 p.m.: "Counter-hegemonic movements in the globalization of mental health". This paper comparatively analyzes two movements that emerged in the 1970s in the context of the contestation of psychiatric institutions and their knowledge, the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform and the MindFreedom movement (United States). Initially with a national horizon, these activist movements have gradually expanded the scope of their struggles, either through the idea of a social transformation carrying universal values (Brazilian Psychiatric Reform), or through the geographical expansion of their implementation and their proposals (MindFreedom International, from the 2000s on). In both cases there is a strong articulation between new epistemic proposals on illness and care and a broad conception of human rights. These articulations are today at the basis of rights-based therapeutic interventions (rights-based approaches). Moreover, they have broadened the scope of the notion of human rights by emphasizing the deepening of citizenship and social participation of individuals strongly stigmatized by their psychiatric diagnosis and psychic differences. In a second moment, we analyze the possibilities and conditions of translation of "rights-based approaches" to the Portuguese reality.
